BISP Payments to Rise to Rs20,000 as IMF demands

According to sources, the global lender has proposed raising the current quarterly BISP Kafalat stipend from Rs14,500 to Rs20,000, bringing an increase of Rs5,500.

The ongoing IMF mission is receiving detailed briefings on the operational aspects of the programme, including its social protection architecture and welfare delivery system. Officials reviewed comprehensive data about beneficiaries already registered under the Kafalat programme, covering family enrollment mechanisms, payment distribution cycles, and projected funding requirements for the upcoming fiscal year.

The broader social protection system is also being examined for transparency, efficiency, and fiscal sustainability, while the future structure of quarterly cash transfers may include further increases in the next fiscal year.

Sources say the ongoing IMF mission schedule remains intensive, with four major meetings, one dedicated to BISP and the remaining sessions involving the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) as part of a wider economic review process.

The IMF also urged the Government of Pakistan to end sales tax exemptions to improve the country’s taxation and revenue structure. These negotiations, outcomes, and ongoing talks could bring far-reaching implications for national fiscal policy, future financial support, and the lives of millions of vulnerable households connected to the BISP framework.
